Rainwater as an Investment

A rainwater harvesting system has higher initial costs than buying water from the central water supplier, but the payback period is less than 1 to 2 years. Save up to 50% on the water bill by reusing water. The largest cost of the system is the cistern container. Construction costs (with new barrels) can range from $250 to $2000. This cost can be reduced drastically by purchasing barrels previously used for food products.

An effective system requires minimal, but regular maintenance. Change the filters every month or two depending on use. Clean the inside of the cistern yearly. Minimize the amount of debris in the gutters and keep leaves out of the filters.

Welcome to American Rain Water Systems

Economy Plumbing and Rainwater Recovery was founded by Dominic Latronico in Italy in 1910.  There they were installing systems for farms, vineyards and private villas.  He then moved to Hollywood, Florida in 1926 where he started up Economy Plumbing.  In 1928 he moved to New York City where his two brothers had a contracting business.  Dominic saw the need for Rainwater Recovery Systems for the farms and vineyards on Long Island North Shore. This is where he started Economy Rainwater Recovery. Economy has installed all types of Rainwater systems from lawn irrigation to commercial fleet washing.

Today, Dominic’s great nephew Michael Latronico is following in the family business of “green” plumbing with a special emphasis on Rainwater Recovery.  Michael owns American Rainwater Systems and Economy Plumbing Co. Inc. as a state certified plumbing contractor (CFC1427709).  We take pride in our work and by helping save our planets most precious resource; Water.

Household Water Consumption

Did you know that drinking water accounts for around 1% of your household water consumption?  Virtually everything else could be provided by capturing and reusing the rain that falls on your roof and recycling your household waste water.  By recycling rain water, a household can realize a water savings around 21% just from toilet flushing, 8% cooking and 1 % leaking.  Another 13% of water consumption go to baths and showers while another 6% is used for cleaning.  The remaining 51% goes to car and garden watering.

Immediate Advantages of Rain Water Recovery/Harvesting

Local benefits

  • Ensures that Florida's wetlands stay healthy
  • Prevents street and sidewalk flooding
  • Keeps public landscaping healthy and lush
  • Prevents run-off of debris and contaniments into rivers

Household benefits

  • Rainwater is free
  • Rainwater can water your lawn with no watering restrictions
  • Rainwater harvesting systems don't require complex systems for lawn irrigation
  • Rainwater provides a water source when groundwater is unacceptable or unavailable
  • Rainwater is chlorine and limescale free which helps prevent scale or rust stains on surrounding items
  • Rainwater is superior for landscape irrigation.
  • Rainwater harvesting reduces flow to stormwater drains and also reduces non-point source pollution
  • Rainwater is "soft" so you avoid the need for costly water softeners
  • Rainwater produces a prolonged life for household appliances
